Journals, Journaling, and Diaries

I am still pondering the security of using a computer for a diary. It's not that I am concerned about the hard drive crashing. That happens. I am concerned about what happens to the journal when someone gets access to my computer after I die or become injured.

I guess it is similar to having a paper diary. People have written those for centuries. The difference is that information access is more available now that it ever was. I use this blog for a live personal journal, for example. Anyone can access it. I try not to get anyone's diaper in a bunch by self censorship. But, accidents happen.

With the diary - access to my mac means that anyone could post / read / edit my materials anytime they want. They can potentially have their feelings hurt by having access to my personal thoughts and feelings. My diary is not censored in any way.

I do have to admit though it is fun to read the diary of one of my ancestors as he went on Sherman's March to the Sea during the Civil War. It is a historical document - though John Shafer probably never thought of it as such. He was just documenting his life - as I am.
